CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Between 51% and 89% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

Fees

Questrade Global uses a spread-only pricing model for forex, so you do not pay a separate trading commission. Instead, the cost is built into the bid-ask spread, which can start at 0.8 pips in normal market conditions but was closer to 2.1 to 2.5 pips on average for major pairs at the time of review. That can make a standard lot trade cost about $20 in all-in spread costs. For CFDs, Questrade adds a small spread plus a $9.95 USD fee per unit, which can make trades expensive; for example, one Tesla CFD unit can cost about $19.95 USD to open and close, before overnight financing charges. Questrade is rated 3.5 stars and is ranked #33 out of 36 brokers for commissions and fees.

IFC Markets is a bit more flexible on pricing. Its average EUR/USD spread is 1.44 pips, which is above the industry average of 1.08, so it is not the cheapest choice for casual forex trading. However, active traders may find better value with its ECN account, where the effective spread is about 1.1 pips after a 0.005% commission on both sides of the trade. The broker also stands out by not charging inactivity fees and by offering active trader discounts, which can help reduce overall trading costs. IFC Markets is rated 4 stars and is ranked #32 out of 36 brokers for commissions and fees.

Overall, IFC Markets has a slight edge over Questrade in the commissions and fees category, mainly because of its ECN pricing and lack of inactivity fees. Questrade can become costly on both forex and CFD trades, especially once its spread-only forex pricing and per-unit CFD fee are taken into account. If low trading costs are a top priority, IFC Markets appears to offer the better value of the two.
