CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Between 51% and 89% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

Regulation

eToro (founded 2007) and Trading 212 (founded 2004) are popular online brokers with strong oversight. According to ForexBrokers.com, eToro earns a 97/99 Trust Score, which falls in the “highly trusted” range (90–99). Trading 212 scores 82/99, placing it in the “trusted” band (80–89). For context, 70–79 is average risk, 60–69 high risk, and below 59 should not be trusted. Neither broker is a bank.

On regulation, eToro holds 4 Tier-1 licenses (highly trusted) and 1 Tier-2 license (trusted), while Trading 212 holds 3 Tier-1 licenses and no Tier-2 licenses. In terms of company status, eToro is publicly traded, whereas Trading 212 is not.

Fees

When it comes to commissions and fees, eToro and Trading 212 both earn 4 out of 5 stars, but eToro ranks a bit higher overall at #22 out of 36 brokers, compared with Trading 212 at #27 out of 36. eToro is a market-maker broker with a typical variable spread of 1 pip on EUR/USD, which is slightly above the industry average. In other words, it is not usually the cheapest choice for spread-based trading, but many users are drawn to its social and copy trading features.

Trading 212 also advertises zero-commission trading, but that does not mean trading is free. For its CFD account, you still pay the spread on CFDs and forex, and its average EUR/USD spread was 2.7 pips in April 2025, which is much higher than average. That makes Trading 212 less competitive on pricing for active CFD and forex traders, even though it has started sharing more spread data for better transparency.

Both brokers have extra account-related features that may affect costs. eToro offers a VIP club called eToro Club with five tiers, from Silver to Diamond, for balances between $5,000 and $250,000, with perks such as Trading Central access, lower deposit and withdrawal fees, and a dedicated account manager. Trading 212 offers an Invest account and a CFD account, but this comparison focuses on CFDs, where spreads matter most. For most price-sensitive traders, neither broker is the clear low-cost leader, but eToro has the slight edge in this category.

Trading platforms and tools

There is one key difference: Trading 212 automatically saves chart drawings in its mobile app, while eToro does not. Even so, eToro holds a slightly higher mobile app rating at 4.5 out of 5 stars, compared with 4 stars for Trading 212. In ForexBrokers.com’s mobile trading apps ranking, eToro comes in at #10 out of 36 brokers, while Trading 212 is ranked #17, giving eToro the edge overall for mobile trading app performance.

Market research

When it comes to market research, eToro has the edge over Trading 212. eToro offers daily market commentary, forex news from major providers like Bloomberg and Reuters, a sentiment tool that shows long and short positioning, TipRanks research, and an economic calendar. Trading 212 also provides forex news, a sentiment tool, and an economic calendar, but it does not include daily market commentary or TipRanks research. Neither broker offers Autochartist, Trading Central, or Acuity Trading tools.

That difference is reflected in expert ratings and rankings. eToro scores 4.5 out of 5 for research and ranks #12 out of 36 brokers at ForexBrokers.com, while Trading 212 is rated 3.5 out of 5 and ranks #32. It is also rated 4.5 out of 5 stars for Education and ranks #3 out of 36 brokers in ForexBrokers.com’s Education category. Trading 212 also provides more than 10 beginner videos and more than 10 advanced videos, but it does not offer monthly educational webinars and does not appear to match eToro’s depth of forex and CFD learning content.

Overall, both brokers give new traders video-based education, but eToro offers a wider mix of formats and stronger coverage for forex and CFDs.
